About

A BOUTIQUE COUPLES’ RETREAT

Ideally situated just a short walk away from the centre of Dorchester, the county town of Dorset. This character property, built in the 1880s as the coach house for Southgate Lodge, has been lovingly refurbished to a high standard, providing the perfect bolthole for anyone who wants to get away from it all, yet still have everything on their doorstep.
With easy access to beautiful countryside and only eight miles from the coast, Dorchester South and West train stations are a ten-minute walk from the property (if travelling without a car) and there is easy access to bus routes covering the county.
A stay at this well-situated property offers many opportunities for walking, cycling, sightseeing, shopping and dining.

Coach House

The accommodation includes a bright, airy sitting room with television, a modern well-equipped kitchen with a breakfast bar and stools. There is a spacious double bedroom, and a large shower room. The outdoor dining terrace with pergola and a table and chairs is the perfect spot for enjoying your morning coffee or an alfresco lunch or dinner.
Guests can easily stroll into town and visit the famous Dorset County Museum to discover and enjoy the richness of the county’s natural, historical and cultural heritage with world-class collections. Other popular attractions within the town are Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum, The Tutankhamun Museum which features a spectacular recreation of Tutankhamun’s tomb and treasures, and The Keep Military Museum. Within easy reach is the Jurassic Coast, and the popular locations of Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Weymouth, Burton Bradstock, West Bay and Charmouth.
Famously named Casterbridge in Thomas Hardy’s novels ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’ and ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, it is easy to appreciate how Dorchester and the surrounding area inspired the author. Just a short stroll away you can amble along the River Frome, and nearby you will find the ruins of a Roman villa with its mosaic tiled floors. Or you can explore Hardy’s home at Max Gate and the surrounding estate. There is stunning open countryside at every turn.

WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID…

“The Coach House is very comfortable, and so spacious! Fen and Caroline, thanks for being lovely hosts, and thanks for the tip about Cogden Beach – had 2 good walks there. Also had a full day out at Abbotsbury, enjoying a walk on the ridge, followed by a visit to the Swannery and the tropical gardens. Enjoyed exploring Dorchester too, especially walking along the river and around the old roman walls.”
